What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made shells crafted from tooth-colored materials (porcelain or composite resin) designed to cover the front surface of teeth. They are permanently bonded to your natural teeth, changing their color, shape, size, or length. Veneers are a premier option in cosmetic dentistry for addressing multiple aesthetic issues simultaneously.
Common Issues Veneers Can Correct
Veneers are an excellent solution for: severely discolored or stained teeth that don’t respond to whitening; worn-down teeth; chipped or broken teeth; misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth; and gaps between teeth (diastema).
Porcelain Veneers vs. Composite Veneers
The two main types of veneers differ in material, process, durability, and cost.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory based on impressions of your prepared teeth. They are highly stain-resistant, reflect light similarly to natural tooth enamel, and are very durable, often lasting 10-15 years or more. The process typically requires two visits: one for preparation and impressions, and a second for bonding. This is a more transformative and permanent solution.
Composite Veneers
Composite resin veneers are applied directly to the tooth and sculpted by the dentist in a single visit. They are generally more affordable than porcelain and require less removal of natural tooth structure. However, they are not as stain-resistant or durable as porcelain, typically lasting 5-7 years before potentially needing repair or replacement. They are a great option for minor corrections or as a transitional solution.
The Veneer Process at McAllen Dental
Getting veneers is a collaborative process between you and Dr. Cazares, ensuring your vision becomes reality.
Step 1: Consultation & Planning
We discuss your goals and examine your teeth. Digital imaging or wax models may be used to show a preview of your new smile. This is when we decide on the type, shade, and number of veneers.
Step 2: Tooth Preparation
A small amount of enamel (about 0.5mm) is removed from the tooth surface to make room for the veneer. This ensures a natural look and proper fit. Impressions are taken and sent to the lab for porcelain veneers, or we proceed directly for composite.
Step 3: Bonding
Once your custom veneers are ready, Dr. Cazares will place them on your teeth to check fit and color. After any adjustments, your teeth are cleaned, etched, and a special cement is applied. The veneer is positioned, and a curing light hardens the cement, securing it permanently.
Caring for Your Veneers
With proper care, veneers can last for many years. Maintain good oral hygiene with non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid using your teeth as tools to open packages. If you grind your teeth at night, ask us about a nightguard. Continue with regular check-ups and cleanings. For patients considering veneers, having a foundation of excellent general dentistry is key to long-term success.
